Setting up dimensions
As an administrator, you decide which dimensions your firm uses and how they behave: their names, what fills in automatically, how members are named, and which dimensions appear on each form. These settings apply to everyone in your firm.
For what dimensions are and how people use them every day, see Dimensions.

Turn dimensions on and set their order
Your name is at the top right of every screen.
Your nameSettingsSystem modules
The Dimensions grid lists every dimension available to your firm. Ticked dimensions are on.
- Tick a dimension to turn it on, or untick it to turn it off.
- Drag the tiles to change their order. The order sets how the dimensions appear in the left panel and in View more.
- Click Done. Apply changes.
Tick a dimension to turn it on, and drag the tiles to change their order.
The grid also shows dimensions that come with plugins, such as Project status or Client types. To use one of them, ask EVX Software to install its plugin.
Turn on only the dimensions your firm will use. Each dimension you turn on adds a section to the left panel and fields to your forms, so fewer dimensions keep screens simpler for everyone.
Rename a dimension
Every dimension has a default name in the system. You can give it the name your team uses.
Your nameSettingsDimension optionsDimension names
- Find the dimension in the Default name column.
- Type the new name in Custom name. Leave it blank to use the default name.
- Click Save changes.
Leave the custom name blank to use the default name.
The new name appears everywhere for everyone in your firm. Some dimensions cannot be renamed, because plugins and reports depend on their names.
Use the names your team already says out loud. For example, the Workspaces dimension is usually renamed Departments. A small firm with no departments can use it for business areas instead, such as Remediation or Environmental site assessments.
Decide what fills in automatically
Some dimensions are linked. A project, for example, belongs to a client and uses a rate schedule. These links decide what fills in on its own when someone classifies a record.
Your nameSettingsDimension optionsDimension association options
Each link between two dimensions has two settings:
| Setting | What it does when set to Yes |
|---|---|
| Autoclassify in the linked dimension when classifying in Project | When someone classifies a record in a project, EVX Software also classifies it in that project's client, rate schedule, or other linked member. |
| Allow to remove related member | People can remove the member that filled in automatically. |
Choose Yes or No for each setting, then click Save changes.
These rules decide what fills in automatically when you classify a record in a project.
The table lists links for every dimension that exists, including dimensions that come with plugins and are not turned on.
Keep autoclassify on for the client and the rate schedule of a project. Every task, time entry, and expense then carries the right client and rates without anyone entering them.
Set how members are named
Your nameSettingsDimension optionsManage Members and Dimensions custom names
For each dimension, the table lists its member types. For example, the Projects dimension holds clients, projects, and folders. For each member type, you can set:
| Column | What it sets |
|---|---|
| Singular name and Plural name | The name of one member and of several, for example Vendor and Vendors |
| Member display-name format | The parts that build a member's name on screen. Click + to add a part. |
| Status | Whether the member type is Enabled or Disabled |
The display-name format builds each project's name from its number, client, and name.
For example, a display-name format of Project Number, Client - Short Name, and Name shows a project as "26-0004 - ADHS - Johnson Elementary School Asbestos inspection". Every project in your firm then follows the same naming rule.
Click Save changes when you are done.
Choose the dimension fields on each form
Your nameSettingsDimension optionsShow dimension selectors when editing objects
This grid decides which dimensions appear in the Related to section when someone creates or edits each kind of record. Rows are kinds of records, such as Task, Time entry, or Invoice. Columns are dimensions.
- Tick a box to show that dimension on that kind of record. Untick it to hide it.
- Click Save changes.
Each tick adds a dimension selector to that kind of record.
Set default values
Your nameSettingsDimension optionsDefault dimension values
A default value fills in automatically on every new record. For example, Approval status starts at Unsubmitted, so every new time entry begins unsubmitted until its owner submits it.
- Next to a dimension, search for and choose the member to use as its default. Leave None for no default.
- Click Save changes.
A default value fills in automatically on every new record.
Choose which dimensions people see
Each person chooses which dimensions appear in their own left panel with View more. See Choose which dimensions you see.
When your firm sets up EVX Software, an administrator sets which dimensions each person sees, so new users start with a left panel that fits their work.
Show each role only the dimensions it works with. A field technician may need projects and job phases, while a project manager also needs clients, rate schedules, and contract stages.
